Empirical mode decomposition for post-processing the GRACE monthly gravity field models

Considering the advantage of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) for extracting geophysical signals and filtering out noise, this paper will first apply EMD approach to post-process Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) monthly gravity field models. A 14-year time-series Release 06 (RL06) models from Center Space Research (CSR) truncated degree order 60 period April 2002 August 2016 are analyzed using compared with traditional Gaussian smoothing filtering. Almost all fitting errors GRACE spherical harmonic coefficients by smaller than those smoothing, indicating that can retain more information original coefficients. The ratios latitude-weighted RMS over land ocean adopted evaluate efficiency eliminating noise. results show almost higher mean ratio 3.61 3.41 respectively. Therefore, we conclude method filter noise effectively especially high-degree coefficients, less leakage effects.
